Have you ever used the garbage disposal in your sink, and it just sounded funky?
Like there was something in there, but you weren’t sure what was it was; but whatever it was, it was certainly not ‘right’? Because, while the junk from the sink is getting ground up and whatever ‘disposed of’ means in that setting, it isn’t doing so in a way that instills confidence in me that something isn’t wrong.
You know the only way to figure it out is to shove your hand down in there and feel around, right?
No one wants to do that, amiright? You don’t know what all is down in there, you could get hurt because there are blades (I think), and it’s gross.
But it’s necessary.
So this morning that was my job. It sounded funky last night when someone else was running it, but I didn’t think much about it. I thought maybe it was just too full or something.
When I was emptying the sink this morning (I don’t do that before bed- judge away if you must) it made that sound again. So I shoved my hand down in that little dark hole, and felt around. Something was wrapped around the blades. When I pulled it out I was so confused. It was a rubber band with hair on it.
EEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWW!!!!!
So glad I got that out of my system. If you’re not over it yet, feel free to go back and read that line again. Whew!
How does a rubber band even get in the sink, let alone wrapped around the disposal blades?!? The world may never know. The fact is that it was in there, it didn’t belong in there, and it had to get taken out.
This can also be said about things in our spiritual lives.
We aren’t supposed to blindly accept everything that everyone says who claims to love God. Scripture tells us to test the spirits. We aren’t supposed to ignore things that seem ‘off’, whether it is something in our own lives, or that in a person we know.
We are supposed to investigate. We are called to search and find out what is making us uneasy, and figure it out.
Sometimes that gut feeling is the still, small voice of the Lord offering you a warning. Don’t ignore it. If you leave it until tomorrow, the problem may not be as easy as pulling a rubber band out of the garbage disposal.
If you’re having a spiritual conversation with someone else, and they say something that seems a little funky, don’t ignore it. Search the Scriptures. If you don’t know how, ask someone else who does to help you.
If you listen to an online preacher, and they are saying things that do not mesh with what God says, don’t just shrug it off. Dig into Scripture, and if they are promoting false teaching, scratch them off your list. They are not a reliable witness for Christ.
Life is too short to waste time with things that “might” be right. Because those things also “might” be wrong. The work of the Gospel is too important to let “rubber bands” get all tangled up in the Lord’s business.
Be a student of the Word. Don’t ignore your gut. Ask the Lord for wisdom. Or you just might end up with a serious problem on your hands. (And in your sink!)
It may seem daunting at first, but it’s necessary. It’s absolutely necessary.
2 Timothy 2:15-19
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.
17 And their word will eat as doth a canker: of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus;
18 Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith of some.
19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.
1 John 4:1-3
1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
Proverbs 30:5, 6
5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
6 Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
