This morning I was catching up on some things on my computer. I took the morning slowly, as the offices at church are closed and we are between holiday celebrations, so there was nothing pressing to be done. I stayed in my pjs for some time while I worked.
After a while, I noticed myself feeling a bit tired, and that I was actually squinting at the computer screen, putting my face closer to it to ease the strain on my eyes.
I looked over, and there my glasses sat, unused. I do actually need them. They help my eyes focus and see things clearly. But they do no good just sitting on my desk.

This made me think of the presence and Word of God in my life.
There are times when things in life are unclear. When I don’t know why something has happened, or what is coming next, or I just can’t see clearly. And I think if I just squint a little, I can make my vision clearer.
Not so.
In order to see clearly, I need the Word of God. I need to pray. I need to commune with God and wait for Him to answer and speak into my life, to ease the strain on my eyes that can’t see clearly without Him.
I always have the Word and prayer available to me, but sometimes I leave them sitting on my desk. I wear myself out working hard, trying to make sense of what I’m seeing without the lens of Scripture, or the clarity that prayer brings.
How is your vision today? Are you squinting, trying to see more clearly on your own? Or are the scriptures and prayer giving you clarity, and bringing rest to your weary eyes?
Psalm 119:133 Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.
Pro 3:5-7
(5) Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
(6) In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
(7) Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
James 1:5-8
(5) If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
(6) But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
(7) For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
[8] A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
Proverbs 2:6-9
(6) For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
(7) He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.
[8] He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.
(9) Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.
