‘I love Jesus but I cuss a little’
T-shirts with cute fonts that are to, what? Let others know we’re human too? Make them look at it and think ‘Girl, me too. I get it.’?
What if the shirt said:
-I love Jesus but I steal a little
-I love Jesus but I can’t control my temper
-I love Jesus but I have affairs sometimes
-I love Jesus but I watch porn
Do cute fonts make those sins more palatable? Are these shirts supposed to unite us in solidarity of sin? Worldly philosophy would have us believe that whatever unites us is good. But we ought to be united in the things of God, not what He has saved us from.
Maybe you think ‘It’s just a t-shirt, lighten up!’. But sin is not cute. It’s not a joke, no matter how cute the shirt looks.
The thing is, God cares about our sin, and we should too. Jesus tells us in John 14:15 that if we love Him, we will keep his commandments. And one of His commandments is that no corrupt communication comes out of our mouths. (Ephesians. 4:29)
We’re supposed to fight against sin if we truly love Jesus. His sacrifice was so enormous. His death was brutal. He suffered. And it was because of our sin. It was serious enough for Him to die in our place.
Struggles with sin aren’t supposed to be an ‘oh well, I have this problem’ kind of thing. Psalm 51 is a beautiful outpouring of the heart of one who knows their sin is an offence to God, and they want to be clean. They know they need God’s help, and they ask Him to cleanse them. God wants us to walk in righteousness! The whole of Ephesians 4 gives us a great guideline for walking in newness of life.
Maybe it would be better if we followed James 5:16. It tells us we should confess our faults one to another and PRAY for one another that we may be healed. Obviously any kind of sin is harmful to us, because we need healed from it!
If you really want to make a t-shirt that shares your sin, maybe it should say this instead:
I love Jesus but I cuss a little- PRAY FOR ME.
Lord help me take my sin as seriously as You do.
