Cowlick Trouble

Have you ever tried to tame a cowlick? I haven’t either. I’ve thought about it, but have never actually done it.

Cowlicks are not easy to deal with! I was born with one right in the middle of my bangs. (Does it age me that I don’t say ‘fringe’?)  And let me tell you, it has a mind of its own. If I don’t want it to go its own way, I have to comb it the same direction as the rest of my hair when it’s wet, and make sure it stays where I want it to while it dries.

Some people train their hair with bobby pins, or parting their hair the other way. Some people even say you can train your hair to grow differently by blow drying in an x pattern. (That doesn’t happen for curly hair. Pretty sure that would just give me the ‘stop staring- it’s humid out today, okay?’ look.)

The things is, I was born with it. It’s my hair’s natural tendency, and if I want it to change, I have to be intentional about making it go the way I want. It won’t change on its own. And the way it goes would likely embarrass me if I left it to its own devices.

My heart is the same way, if I think about it. I was born with it being in sin, and if I let it go the way it wants to, then it ends up embarrassing me. I have to intentionally train it to go the right way, and that means checking it often to see which way it lies, so I can guide it in the right direction. I know it won’t go the right way on its own, but thankfully God has given me tools to keep it in check.

Romans 7:18 “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.”

Psalm 119:103-105 “How sweet are thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth! (104) Through thy precepts I get understanding: therefore I hate every false way. (105) NUN. Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

Lord, help me not to just let my heart go the way it wants, but take the time to be intentional and train it to follow Your ways!
